Rumor was that a high-speed car chase had ended right in our patch: a van crashed through the garden’s border plants and came to rest across four of the beds, including ours. Neighbors say that the assailant escaped up a long set of stairs, outrunning the cops.

I stopped by yesterday to survey the damage. The offending vehicle had been removed, and the two beds due east of ours had taken the brunt of the damage. There are deep tire marks in the soil. The small retaining wall separating us from our neighbors was crushed to splinters, meaning that half of my plot isn’t usable right now. Lettuce and chard were strewn everywhere.

The important thing is that no one was hurt.

And I was happy to note that the fava beans I’d written off are finally poking through the soil, and none were harmed.
