Time to find out whether kale really does get sweeter with a good frost. That’s only if the plants survive the chilly weather of late, of course, and I’m not optimistic. Most of my winter plantings look flat out dead today, including a tray of baby lettuces that got left outside by mistake. The garden does look clean and pretty though if you don’t get too close.

I’ve been afraid to go out and look although I’ll go check on the kale tomorrow. 24.3F currently! The hens didn’t want anything to do with the snow even though the rooster was trying to entice them out.
So did you taste the kale?

We’re wondering the same thing – will the brassicas improve in a deep freeze? We harvested almost all of our lettuce last weekend, but left the kale and brocoli to ‘sweeten’ in the freeze. Hard to imagine that happening, but that’s the promise (or the myth).
